Is there really a speeding problem in Woore?

The Parish Council monitors the speed of vehicles through Woore on the A51 and the Newcastle Road using the 4 MVAS (movable vehicle activated sign) units that display your speed as you pass. The speed and time of each vehicle passing is recorded, downloaded for analysis, and is available on the Parish Council website. The following information was recorded from the MVAS on the London Rd near the tennis courts entrance. This is very close to the Junior School and so the specific information below focuses on north bound traffic, between 8 – 9 am, and 3 – 4 pm, on Monday – Friday, from 20th June to 3rd July this year. In other words, two weeks of school drop off and pick up times.

Over those two weeks, between 8 – 9 am, 3929 north bound vehicles were recorded (average of 393 a day). Between 3 – 4 pm, 3008 vehicles (average of 301 a day).

The number of those vehicles doing 35mph or more in a 30mph zone (in other words, those who would get a ticket if caught by the police), between 8 – 9 am, 99 vehicles (average of 10 a day). Between 3 – 4 pm, 78 vehicles (average of 8 a day).

One vehicle was recorded doing between 60-65 mph at about 8:40 am on Tuesday 23rd June. 

So if you think that Woore has a speeding problem here are some things you can do to help:

  • Check your speed when driving through Woore – many of those speeding are local drivers.
  • Talk to your friends and neighbours to raise awareness.
  • Stick a 30 or 40 mph sticker on your wheelie bin (available from the Victory Hall lobby).
  • Contact the Police with your concerns about speeding in the Village, via your Safer Neighbourhood Team at Market Drayton. Or speak to the Police at the monthly Community Cafe at the Victory Hall (2-4pm, on the third Friday of the month), or at the mobile Police Station when in the Village.
  • Help monitor speeds by joining our local Community Speed Watch group, who record speeds of vehicles in the Village – you may have seen us. Contact the Parish Clerk for more details (clerk@wooreparishcouncil.gov.uk).

As well as our Parish Council owned Mobile Vehicle Activated Sign (MVAS)  there is a fixed one (VAS) located on the A51 at Priory Gardens (facing south towards The Chetwode), the information from which is located above under Pipe Gate. We are able to publish this only once SC forward updated information to us, which we do as soon as it’s received, currently quarterly. There is also a VAS on the A525 Newcastle Road entrance to Woore.

Below are the total number of vehicles picked up by the 4 MVAS units in September 2026 (“Total vehicles and number speeding September 2026 from the MVAS”) and the numbers of vehicles doing 5 mph or more over the speed limit that would have got a ticket if they were caught (numbers in red).
